To help increase the number of users, which might be important in light of the number of recent violent crimes, Woodruff said he is open to suggestions for forums or other public events to educate the public on the benefits of the service.
"We want to get the relevant information out so people are informed and safe," Woodruff said.
Anderson, the DeKalb resident concerned with the wake-up text message, also said the shots-fired incidents are having a negative effect on Northern Illinois University.
"What bothers me most is one of these days, these people are going to learn how to hit something with these guns, and this is not good news for the college," Anderson said. "You've got to put more plainclothes police on the weekend and not in a marked car to catch these rascals, because pretty soon, somebody's going to get hurt."
