SPRINGFIELD – Legislation sponsored by Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, that aims to help individuals older than 21 obtain a high school diploma was signed into law by Gov. Bruce Rauner on Friday.
The new law will permit Goodwill Industries to establish an Excel Center, which offers a tuition-free public education for adults, in the Rockford area. Through this program, adults can receive a high school diploma instead of having to pass a test in order to receive a General Education Diploma.
“It is important that Illinois continues to look as new ways to improve the educational and employment opportunities for all of our residents,” Pritchard said in a news release. “Excel Centers have a proven track record and will help its graduates obtain better paying jobs.”
The first center would be located in Rockford but depending on the success of the program, others could pop up across the state.
