The Lancers made a field goal early in the fourth quarter to build a 17-12 lead, marching down to the DeKalb 9 before the drive stalled. After the Barbs went three-and-out, the Lancers took over on their 32. They marched down to the 1 and were poised to score.
But 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior running back David Kirkpatrick-Hardwick was stuffed by the DeKalb line for a 3-yard loss, then Smith broke through the line to hit Kirkpatrick-Hardwick for a 2-yard loss. After an incomplete pass, Lake Park brought on the kicking team for another field goal, and this time, DeKalb blocked it.
The Barbs couldn’t answer on their next drive, and Lake Park took over with less than two minutes left and the Barbs having only two timeouts. But the DeKalb defense held again, the Lancers managed six yards and had to punt with less than a minute left.
