To the Editor:

Today, I was joined by dozens of supporters as I announced my Republican candidacy to represent the residents of the 70th House District in the Illinois General Assembly.

I have never before sought elected office and seek to become a citizen legislator.

I was moved to seek office because of the chaos coming from the state Capitol and its impact on businesses and families in northern Illinois.

Let me be clear: I love Illinois. I feel strongly that I am here to help the wounded soul of Illinois return to health.

I want to restore the sense of pride that Illinois residents had for generations. When I talk with others about Illinois, some just shake their heads or some have a dismal commentary on where we find our state's affairs. I’m sure you all have been there. We all know it can be better.

But so many of us also just shake our heads and grumble, because the work seems so daunting.

We have all the parts to thrive and grow. However, Illinois’ economy remains stagnant because government is hobbling these resources with over-regulation, taxes and uncertainty. I want an Illinois where working in government means you understand that you are not using resources or revenues, but that you are using “other people’s money” each and every time you make a decision to spend. An Illinois where when we see a misuse of the taxpayer’s resources as an injustice, not “just the way it is.”

I know we won’t always agree, just as you don’t always agree with your spouse, your kids, your parents or your co-workers. But if we don’t agree, we should walk away with integrity and know there’s been thoughtful dialogue. Not develop a personal animosity that seems to be the norm these days. Illinois is too important to allow it to stand as it is.

I have had six generations of our family call Illinois home … six prior generations who have known a thriving, vibrant Illinois. We should strive for an Illinois where you make your strongest effort to leave it a bit better than you found it for all citizens.

I hope to visit with you about your concerns about our state and the joys our state has provided you. I also hope to earn your vote in 2018.

Jeff Keicher

70th District representative candidate
