NIU interim President Lisa Freeman, who replaced former President Doug Baker after his resignation at the end of June, also
spoke about the university’s future during the event.
Although Freeman said one of her top priorities will be to foster pride in the university both on campus and throughout the
community, she also cited the state passing its first budget in about two years as a positive step forward.
“After 736 days, we have a budget and an appropriation from the state of Illinois, which means we can start to repair the
damage from the budget impasse and restore financial stability,” Freeman said. “We have started the work we need to do to
determine how quickly we can address the neglected employee compensation issue.”
