SYCAMORE – The Marathon gas station in Sycamore has moved to a bigger location down the street that has been vacant since the former Wendy’s restaurant was demolished after a fire in 2015.
The Western Trail Outpost at 439 E. State St. features rustic, car-themed decor and antique gas station memorabilia, while the Corral Marathon Station at 503 E. State St. has closed.
Owner Randy Carls gained City Council approval in December with a special-use permit to operate the new gas station within 660 feet of a residential area.
Carls said he will work with city officials in the coming months on plans to open a retail store at the Corral Marathon site.
“I like that end of town, and I want to see it flourish,” he said.
Carls said he considered rebuilding the Corral station, but he decided instead to start from scratch with the new one in order to offer customers more parking spaces, vehicle maneuverability and gas pumps.
The new station features turn lanes in and out of the parking lot and has six dispensers with 12 fueling positions, he said.
“The old location was quaint and nice, but it was intimidating at peak [traffic] times,” Carls said.
Carls said the new station is modeled after a “sister station” of the same name and theme in Campton Hills, and he will soon be adding an outdoor seating area for customers.
The gas station also is hiring clerks for the convenience store, with both full- and part-time positions available, he said. Call 815-286-3281 for information.
