Montgomery man killed in hit-and-run on I-88 identified

SYCAMORE – Authorities on Monday identified the person who was found dead along Interstate 88 in DeKalb as 25-year-old Ryan A. Mertl of Montgomery.

Mertl, of the first block of Shermead Road, was found dead Saturday in a ditch along westbound I-88 near mile marker 92.25, just east of South Annie Glidden Road, the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office confirmed.

Illinois State Police were dispatched to the scene at about 6 a.m. and found Mertl’s body when they arrived. Preliminary investigation indicated the man was walking along the side of the road when he was hit by a vehicle, police said.

Illinois State Police Capt. Robert Meeder said Monday that investigators were in the process of conducting interviews and not yet ready to release further details.

“We are still investigating the case and determining what caused [the death],” he said.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said preliminary results of an autopsy performed Monday showed Mertl died of massive injuries to his head and body. He declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation.

Full toxicology results can take up to two weeks, Miller said.
