Letter: Call it what it is: Theft care

To the Editor:

With the "leadership" of right-wing zealots such as House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate President Mitch McConnell, we are witnessing an astounding spectacle. The Reactionary Republicans are demolishing a successful health program that has aided many who previously had no affordable health care, throwing tens of millions off the insured rolls, slashing Medicaid and scaling back Medicare, and guaranteeing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans and the financial insolvency of millions – likely including you.

Trump calls this "having heart."

And for what? To give a yuge tax break to the richest Americans. These Social Darwinists truly believe the wealthy are rightfully privileged in our society by their monetary success, and the poor, elderly and underemployed minorities are a drag on society.

At least, that's what a good look at this Republican Theft-Care bill suggests – that's what it is, a theft of health care on a massive scale from those most in need.

These GOP representatives and senators do not care about you or your problems. They seek to favor the rich who fund their campaigns.

And if you are a local Republican who votes for them, you are their enabler, and you are every bit as responsible as they are for the calamity they are devising.

Shame on you all. Your families have been Republicans, out of habit, for generations, ever since the Republicans were a brand-new anti-slavery party in the 1850s. But times have changed, and so have the parties. Your GOP now has only one priority – the further enrichment of the already obscenely rich – including themselves.

The Democratic Party has for generations now been the party of the underprivileged, the working class and the formerly growing middle class. It stands for a fair shake for everyone, not the empowerment of a ruling class.

Why don't you come join us, and let's have our democracy back!

Jack Reich
