Area roundup: Harrod qualifies for finals in two events; NIU baseball falls

Audrey Harrod qualified for the finals in both the 400-meter and 800 runs on Thursday at the Class 1A State Championship in Charleston.

The Hinckley-Big Rock senior had the second-fastest qualifying time in the 800 at 2 minutes, 20.63 seconds, and third-fastest in the 400 with a 59.34.

The Class 2A and 3A preliminaries are Friday, with the finals for all classes on Saturday.

Harrod missed qualifying in the 200, with her 26.95 placing her 16th. Olivia Saucedo, also of the Royals, cleared 4 feet, 11 inches, in the high jump but needed 5-1 to advance.

PREP BASEBALL

DeKalb falls at Rockford Lutheran: The Barbs outhit Lutheran but lost, 3-2.

Charles Roberts had two of DeKalb’s five hits in the game. Matt Howard and Ryne Kerschke had RBIs for DeKalb.

Eric Nelson and John Brei combined to allow three hits and no earned runs. DeKalb committed three errors.

PREP SOFTBALL

G-K falls to Marengo: The Cogs lost, 15-5, in the regular season finale.

The playoffs start for G-K on Wednesday in the Class 3A Belvidere Regional against the hosts.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

NIU falls to Miami: The NIU baseball team (15-36, 9-13 MAC) dropped its series opener, 9-5, to Miami (Ohio) (22-32, 8-14 MAC) in Oxford.

The game had five different lead changes and was tied at four different times throughout.

“We need to play better defense and control the things we can control,” coach Mike Kunigonis said. “We did not do a good job of that today; we were sloppy in many areas but kept fighting.”

The Huskies made two errors in the game, both on bunt plays, which cost them four unearned runs in the third and sixth innings. The Redhawks had four straight batters bunt in the second inning to help them score three runs as the first two bunts reached base and the next two came as sacrifices.

Newark tops H-BR: The Royals lost, 10-5, to Newark in a semifinal of the Class 1A Aurora Christian Regional.

Aquin edges Hiawatha: The Hawks lost, 7-6, to Aquin in a semifinal of the Class 1A Aquin Regional in Freeport.
