To the Editor:
Transparency is the term that describes how those who are affected by rulings of the City Council are informed about how decisions are made.
Those who are subject to the choices of a governing body should be informed about the facts that led to each decision.
Ideally, all candidates for public office should have studied the facts concerning a matter, evaluated and analyzed the information and reached a logical and realistic conclusion. Unfortunately, in the present four-way race for mayor of DeKalb, this has not been the guiding principle for most of the candidates.
Of the four, only Misty Haji-Sheikh has provided fresh new ideas to solve municipal problems that detract from DeKalb as a desirable place to live and work. Many of these will not cost the city much, if any, money.
Misty has presented detailed plans for combating crime, saving the city administrative costs, bringing DeKalb new career-level jobs and reducing the dependence on increasing property taxes, while simultaneously informing residents about how their local government functions.
She has been working toward this goal for more than a year, presenting well-researched and legally valid criticisms regarding the manner in which the present City Council and mayor conduct votes and make decisions. She has written letters to the Chronicle as well as speaking before the City Council.
Misty has asked the present city administration for information that ought to be available to all residents with regard to how city governing dollars are being spent. Deplorably, in many cases she has been told that those documents are “confidential,” and the requested information has been withheld.
This is the opposite of transparency. It is long overdue for the city of DeKalb to adhere to state laws governing issues on mayoral voting at the City Council and to correct the past erroneous policies.
No other candidate for mayor has presented this level of honesty about disclosure of governance to DeKalb. Electing Misty Haji-Sheikh the next mayor of DeKalb is the only means of improving the way in which the city’s business is conducted.
The other candidates represent the same old ideas and will conduct business as usual. Join me in voting for the one candidate who has fresh ideas and a record of helping the residents of DeKalb.
I’m voting for Misty for mayor.
