To the Editor:
I am a resident of DeKalb who was born and raised in Chicago’s southwest side and always looked forward to moving to a safer, quieter, and friendlier community.
That was exactly what we found in DeKalb when my wife, Dr. Karen Federici, and I moved here 10 years ago with our four children.
We had no concerns about safety. Unfortunately, this is no longer true. In addition, it seems that the perception of DeKalb from outside the county has also changed. News of local bank robberies, burglaries and shootings has spread. Indeed, these crimes are becoming a far-too-regular occurrence in our community.
Our leadership at all levels, including the state’s attorney, needs to be more aggressive in deterring crime. It is my understanding that charged felonies are being pleaded down to lesser felonies or misdemeanors, perhaps too often.
I recently had coffee with Rick Amato and believe that he is focused on standing with law enforcement to make the county safer. He seems to get along with local police, has built a well-respected law practice, and has an excellent background.
Therefore, Rick Amato is my choice for state’s attorney.
