KIRKLAND – A water main break Friday shut down Hiawatha School District 426, but the district will reopen Monday, officials said.
Dave Hunstman, the district’s maintenance and grounds director, said that the pipe was more than 50 years old and the cold weather probably caused the break. No damage was done to the school building.
“It broke outside,” he said. “So we just don’t have any water to cook with, no bathrooms.”
He said the pipe would be fixed before noon Friday. It will have to undergo a standard bacteria test by the city of DeKalb, he said.
“That takes 24 hours,” he said. “It shouldn’t be a problem.”
