NIU police investigate after man's body is found on DeKalb campus

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University police launched a death investigation Tuesday after a person discovered a man’s body on university property near the DeKalb campus.

The body was found around 10 a.m. Tuesday near a path behind the WNIJ-WNIU Broadcast Studios, 801 N. First St., DeKalb.

Police said foul play was not suspected in the man’s death, but officials released few details about the case.
NIU police are working with the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office, NIU spokesman Joe King said.

Officials from the coroner’s office couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

King said officials still were working to find and contact the man’s family late Tuesday afternoon. It was not yet clear whether the man was an NIU student.

“He seemed to be of an age where he could possibly be a student, but I don’t know for a fact that he was,” King said.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack confirmed the investigation and said the body had been discovered by a civilian.

He declined to comment further on the circumstances of the death, citing the ongoing police investigation.
