Chiropractic care is good pre-natal care

Getting a chiropractic adjustment while pregnant is excellent pre-natal care for mom and baby, both, said Dr. Morgan Sheedy of Sycamore Integrated Health.

“A woman’s body goes through so many changes during pregnancy. Chiropractic adjustments can make sure everything in the spine, pelvis and low back are positioned correctly to allow the baby to develop normally,” Sheedy said. “And it can make delivery quicker and easier, too.”

Because of the changes in a woman’s body as the baby grows, the mother’s organs become constricted and have to work harder. The baby’s growth also puts stress on the low back in particular, and can cause lower back pain and sciatica.

Sheedy said any time a woman’s body is misaligned, it can reduce the space the baby has to develop. Regular chiropractic adjustments align the body properly and reduce stress on joints, muscles and ligaments. Sheedy said treatment also can help alleviate troubling symptoms like nausea.

“A lot of women start or continue chiropractic care before they even become pregnant,” Sheedy said. “Along with keeping mom feeling good during her pregnancy, continuing treatment also can help ease labor and delivery, and perhaps even reduce the need for pain medications.

“When the body is properly aligned, there is space for the baby not only to develop properly, but to get in the best position for delivery. Pelvic misalignments make it difficult for baby to move into the correct position.”

Sheedy said cesarean sections often occur because of difficult labors, and proper alignment could help to reduce the need for surgical or medical intervention during delivery.

She recommends chiropractic care as part of regular pre-natal care to keep mom healthy and baby growing properly.
