Kyle Quintell’s equalizer in the 20th minute stood for the rest of the match as the Genoa-Kingston boys soccer team tied Byron, 1-1, Tuesday at home in the season opener.
Andrew Caldwell allowed one goal, coming in the 15th minute, and settled down the rest of the way in net for the Cogs.
“Andrew Caldwell did a great job in goal,” G-K coach Randy Tate said. “He made several nice saves and pretty much kept us in the game.”

Jake Hed was the medalist, shooting a 37 to pace the Knights to a 157. Jesse Denton shot a 39, Jeremy Faletto a 40 and Brett Glennon a 41 for the Knights.
Jacob Cook led the Barbs with a 38, Connor Hoyle shot a 39, Austin Freeman a 40 and Zach Elliot and Ben Vance each shot 41.
Sycamore edges Morris: Trent Scott and Martin Hurst each shot 39s to lead Sycamore past Morris, 160-167, in the NI Big 12 opener for both teams.
Keegan White and Keegan Potter each shot 41s for Sycamore.
Indian Creek tops Somonauk: Drew Headley and Peyton Gatz each shot 43s to lead Indian Creek to a 179-208 win over Somonauk at Edgebrook in Sandwich. David Boehne shot a 45 for Indian Creek.
Indian Creek second: Paced by Delaney Bend, Indian Creek shot a 237 to take second at a three-team meet in Sandwich.
Somonauk shot a 230 for the win. Sandwich shot a 274. Sandwich’s Ashley Guilinger was the medalist with a 43.
Katherine Nolan carded a 47 for Indian Creek.
Hononegah tops DeKalb: Mary Ellen Green earned DeKalb’s only win in a 4-1 loss to Hononegah in the season opener.
