Mediation fails to settle Galesburg teacher strike

GALESBURG – Thousands of students are staying home again in Galesburg as a weekend mediation session between a teachers union and the board of education failed to result in a contract agreement.

The (Galesburg) Register-Mail (http://bit.ly/1tB5sHM ) reports that a mediation session between the Galesburg Education Association and the District 205 Board of Education lasted four hours Sunday without a resolution.

The next session is scheduled for Tuesday. That means the 4,500 students who've missed eight days of school likely will miss at least a couple more because the superintendent says the two sides won't meet without a mediator.

More than 600 employees have participated in the strike that began Aug. 13. Both sides say the only issue left is that of a ranking system for laying off and hiring back teachers.
