NIU explains campus Internet security upgrades
DeKALB - Northern Illinois University officials explained their firewall upgrades Wednesday in light of incorrect reports claiming they were banning student access to social media.
NIU officials have not made any changes to their longstanding acceptable use policy, which is shown when an Internet users encounter sites that pose security threats, according to a news release. The acceptable use policy limits employees from excessively using state-owned computer systems for personal use, among other things.
Meanwhile, campus officials recently have redesigned the network firewall to better protect against hostile external attacks, but the system is still in the early phases of tuning, the news release states.
