DeKalb boys golf wins season opener

Published: Monday, Aug. 18, 2014 10:03 p.m. CDT

Austin Freeman and the DeKalb boys golf team started the season on the right foot.

Freeman won the Boylan Invite on Monday at The Ledges in Rockton, carding a 2-under-par 70, pacing the Barbs to a one-stroke win over Hononegah.

After starting the day with a double bogey, Ben Melms settled down to shoot a 1-over 73 for DeKalb. Jacob Cook shot a 76 and Connor Hoyle a 77 for the Barbs to take 10th and 11th, respectively.

"It kind of validates those kids and the hard work they put in during the summer," coach John Cordes said. "It's also a nice measure of how we're going to do on a non-home course."

The junior-varsity team won on the power of its fifth golfer, Ben Vance, who shot an 87. Nathan Sisler's 81 led the way for the Barbs and put him in a tie for third.
