Northern Illinois has hired Tanya Gombera as its new women's tennis caoch, the school announced Thursday.

Gombera, a former standout at Akron, is the ninth head coach in school history. She spent the past two seasons as an assistant for the men's and women's teams at North Dakota.

"Tanya Gombera quickly rose to the top in an outstanding pool of candidates for this position," NIU athletic director Sean Frazier said in a news release. "She has a vision for the program that will move Huskie women's tennis forward and her ability to connect with people – from recruits to student-athletes to alumni – and familiarity with the Mid-American Conference will be a huge asset to NIU."
