St. Mary offers new preschool programs

St. Mary Catholic School in DeKalb is now offering preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds.

A typical day in the preschool room will include self-selected free play activity along with more structured instruction and activities. Areas of learning will include art, literacy, math, music, physical education, religion, science, social skills, social studies, Spanish and technology.

The preschool teacher is Allegra Elliott, who holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Austin Peay State University in Tennessee and a master’s degree in elementary education, preK-6, from Old Dominion University in Virginia. She was a preschool teacher at International Montessori Academy in Sycamore during the 2011-2012 school year, and for the past two years she has taught students with special needs at Hinckley-Big Rock Elementary School.

The 3-year-old program will be held from 7:50 to 10:50 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children must be age 3 by Sept. 1. The 4-year-old program will be held from 7:50 to 10:50 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Children must be age 4 by Sept. 1.

St. Mary Catholic School, 210 Gurler Road, was founded in 1913 and provides primary education from preschool through eighth grade to students of all faiths following Catholic Christian traditions.
