Illinois treasurer race heats up over accusations

Published: Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 2:44 p.m. CDT

SPRINGFIELD – The normally lackluster race for Illinois state treasurer is becoming increasingly contentious.

Republican candidate Tom Cross' campaign held a series of stops Tuesday to talk about what it calls financial mismanagement and patronage by his opponent, state Sen. Michael Frerichs, in the Democrat's previous role as Champaign County auditor. Cross was absent because of a conflict, a spokesman said.

Officials say an early retirement program proposed by Frerichs cost taxpayers millions. They also say Frerichs improperly pushed the county to hire two local Democrats.

Frerichs says his decisions didn't lead the program to lose money. He says he never employed the Democrats in his post.

Recently, the Cross campaign also circulated information that Frerichs didn't pay $1,800 in back taxes for his legislative office. Frerichs disputed the county's determination.
