2 hurt in DeKalb apartment fire

DeKALB – Authorities are investigating what caused a kitchen fire that caused minor injuries to a firefighter and police officer in a University Heights apartment.

The third floor apartment at 1110 Varsity Blvd. was filled with smoke and heat when firefighters arrived about 6:40 p.m. Sunday, according to news release from the DeKalb Fire Department. Firefighters had the fire under control within 10 minutes, and the $50,000 in damage was contained to the apartment where it started, the news release stated.

The apartment’s residents were not home during the fire, but building management and firefighters helped them find temporary housing afterward, according to the news release. Firefighters remained on the scene for 2 hours and 35 minutes.
