Chicago mayor defends welcoming immigrant kids

CHICAGO — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says bringing to Chicago some 1,000 immigrant children who have fled Central America is simply the right thing to do.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Emanuel believes welcoming the children who are part of an influx of immigrants across the U.S. border with Mexico "speaks to who we are as a city" and to the city's values.

Emanuel cites his immigrant grandfather's flight from Eastern Europe and violence. Emanuel says that ancestor was just 13, alone and couldn't speak English.

President Barack Obama's administration in recent weeks approached Emanuel about perhaps housing 1,000 immigrant children in Chicago sites bankrolled by the federal government, complete with federally-funded security and support services.

The Emanuel administration has also asked Chicago law firms to donate their services.
