Marjorie Baie says her “part-time hobby” is a passion that keeps her up late nights before a craft show.
Baie of Sycamore is one of 32 artists who will exhibit and sell paintings, prints, sculptures, jewelry and more on the Ellwood House lawn Sunday as part of the annual Art Fair & Ice Cream Social.
It will be Baie’s third year selling her handcrafted jewelry during the event, and her fourth year making unique jewelry, which sells for $10 to $40. She said the Ellwood House Art Fair is one of her favorite shows of the year and she generally brings 300 pieces to sell. She said the Ellwood House show is a wonderful event for artists and the community alike.
“I started making jewelry for myself, and had friends of mine telling me I should try to sell it,” she said. “I started with running a booth at Huntley Middle School’s show, then I started traveling to different art shows and communities.”
Baie makes jewelry by upcycling other items, she said. She makes jewelry using typewriter keys and Scrabble game pieces, especially if people want their initials or something spelled out on a charm bracelet. She also can do custom orders, such as incorporating a family pocketwatch into a piece of jewelry so that it can be worn by different family members.
“It’s fun to upcycle things and give them new life again,” she said.
Baie works on products throughout the year to build up an inventory, but before the weekend of the show, she puts in extra hours around her full-time job.
“Before the show I’ll still be working all hours of the night,” she said. “I keep saying I need to make just one more piece. This is my part-time hobby, but it’s my passion.”
The event also will feature ice cream and refreshments. The DeKalb Municipal Band will perform in the afternoon on the terrace.
“It’s nice for us to have an event to focus on the arts,” said Scott Tews, Ellwood House public programs and collections coordinator. “It gives local artists a place to showcase local art.”
For Baie, it’s a chance to see her work on display and reach a local audience.
“It started as something for myself but it has just grown,” she said. “It’s great seeing what I have visualized come together in the piece.”
