ATF director to tour new Chicago gun center

CHICAGO (AP) — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois toured a new Chicago center authorities say may help stem gun-related violence in the nation's third latest city.

After his Friday tour, Durbin said he thinks the Gun Crime Intelligence Center will be a crucial tool in the fight against gun violence and help authorities stem the flow of illegal guns into the city.

Durbin says not only will the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives center be better able to track guns, it could also lead to arrests by linking guns seized from people in Chicago to crimes all over the country.

The center is one of several initiatives designed to help Chicago battle persistent street-level violence. Another move is the assignment of seven additional ATF agents to Chicago.
