Letter: DeKalb, Galesburg similar college towns

To the Editor:

Thanks for your article, “DeKalb, NIU focus on long-term collaboration.”

While reading your article, I could not help remembering and comparing Galesburg, Illinois.

We moved here from Galesburg in 2006, and the friendliness is similar. Knox College and Carl Sandburg College are similar to Northern Illinois University and Kishwaukee College. The populations of Knox County and DeKalb County are comparable. Family activities are similar; the Pumpkin Festival and Knox County Scenic Drive occur nearly the same. Family is important.

Galesburg has Seminary Street between Knox College and its downtown, just like DeKalb has the Ellwood Historic Neighborhood between NIU and downtown DeKalb.

Maybe the DeKalb-NIU group should look at Galesburg-Knox integration with Seminary Street model as an example. Never hurts to see what your neighbors do to find success. And the development of a college business district in a local city that houses a college campus.
