ELGIN, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in the Chicago suburb of Elgin are searching for a prisoner who escaped while he was being transported from a mental health facility to a courthouse.

Elgin Police Commander Ana Lalley says Jesse Vega managed to escape Wednesday morning as he was being taken from the Elgin Mental Health Center to the Lake County courthouse in Waukegan.

Lalley says people should not confront Vega but should call 911.

Vega has federal warrants, but Lalley did not have any further details about his criminal history.

Authorities say Vega is heavily-tattooed and was wearing handcuffs, a blue shirt, blue jeans and white shoes when he escaped.
