St. John keeping busy with VBS, projects

Published: Friday, July 18, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John (Missouri Synod) is busy preparing for vacation Bible school, the annual “Apple Tree Pick” for Safe Passage and a missionary trip.

Vacation Bible school will take place from 9 a.m. to noon July 28 through Aug. 1. The theme this year is “Gateway to Galilee.” Each day will have a theme: Jesus Calls Me; Jesus Teaches Me; Jesus Keeps Me Safe; Jesus Saves Me; and Jesus Provides All I Need.

At VBS, children will learn that Jesus gives amazing grace. Children can explore Bible stories, take Bible challenges, eat snacks, sing songs and meet new friends.

St. John is located at 26555 Brickville Road in Sycamore. For more information, call 815-895-4477. To register for VBS, visit or register at the church.

The annual Apple Tree Pick for Safe Passage also is taking place at the church. Members “pick” an apple that has a child’s name on it and their clothing and shoe sizes. Members purchase the items and gift wrap them.

The presents are then taken to Safe Passage by members of the Outreach Committee at St. John. This committee has done this program for many years and the children are very appreciative of the gifts.

Lastly, some members of the church, along with Pastor Robert Weinhold, are planning a future trip to Belize as part of a missionary project through Central American Lutheran Mission Society. Some aspects of this trip are building skills, teaching skills, nursing or physical therapy skills and other areas to try to match needed skills with members.
