Barnes & Noble series celebrates pop culture

Barnes & Noble, in the Oakland Center shopping center in DeKalb, will host a five-week "Get Pop-Cultured" series of events beginning Friday.

Get Pop-Cultured will bring fan experiences to customers at Oakland Center and at all Barnes & Noble stores across the country. The campaign will highlight the huge influence that books, graphic novels, movies, TV shows, music, toys, games and collectibles have on culture. Customers can enter the Get Pop-Cultured Sweepstakes from NOOK for a chance to win a $1,000 Barnes & Noble Gift Card, a Warner Bros. Studio VIP Tour for two, and many other prizes by visiting the NOOK counter at Barnes & Noble.

Barnes & Noble will host a preview weekend starting Friday, when fans can get sneak peeks at new titles by their favorite authors and illustrators. The DeKalb store will have limited quantities of free chapter samples from upcoming releases, posters, and digital downloads. On Saturday, the store will host a costume contest in which customers of all ages are invited to come to the store dressed as their favorite fictional characters to get $1 off beverages at the store's cafe. They can also post photos of themselves in costume on social media using the hashtag combo #GetPopCultured #Contest for a chance to win prizes.

July 23 through 27 will be the store's DC Comics Spectacular, paying tribute to the creator of characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. There will be activities, giveaways, and discounts on DC Comics graphic novels. The event kicks off with Batman Day on July 23, with giveaways of Batman merchandise, including a special edition 75th anniversary Batman collector's comic featuring the original Batman story (quantities limited) and the reimagined origin story.

At 1 p.m. Aug. 1, the store will celebrate Disney's "Frozen," the highest-grossing animated film of all time, with a sing-along, craft and story time event, "Cool Off with Olaf."

Aug. 2 will be Marvel Day, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the creator of such heroes as Spider-Man and The Avengers. The day will feature activities, giveaways, and product offerings.

On Aug. 3, fans of bestselling author James Patterson can celebrate the man who holds the Guinness World Record for most No. 1 New York Times bestsellers with activities, giveaways, prizes and discounts.

After a number of adaptations, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back with the Aug. 8 release of their new movie, and Barnes & Noble will celebrate Aug. 4, with a Junior Ninja Training Academy event. Visit the store for more information.

The five-week celebration concludes Aug. 9 and 10 with a celebration of titles successful on both page and screen, including "The Hobbit," "Doctor Who," "The Fault In Our Stars" and "Game of Thrones."
