Former Illinois township official indicted

SPRINGFIELD — The U.S. Attorney's Office says a former township supervisor in eastern Illinois has been indicted for allegedly stealing more than $60,000 from the township.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, a federal grand jury in Springfield on Wednesday indicted 35-year-old Leon Eddie Mondy of St. Anne of one count of wire fraud. The town is about 70 miles south of Chicago.

A telephone message left for Mondy was not immediately returned.

Mondy is accused of withdrawing more than $60,000 from accounts used for a senior nutrition program, a community center and other operations of Pembroke Township in Kankakee County in 2012 and 2013.

The indictment says Mondy claimed he was using the money for the township but instead used it himself. Part of the money was allegedly used for gambling.
