8-year-old Urbana boy shot in head

Published: Wednesday, July 2, 2014 8:40 a.m. CDT

URBANA – Authorities say an 8-year-old Urbana boy is expected to survive after he was shot in the head, allegedly by a 15-year-old relative.

The News Gazette in Champaign (http://bit.ly/1o1yP0E ) reports that Urbana police say the boy underwent surgery after Tuesday night's shooting. They did not immediately know his condition.

Urbana Police Sgt. Dan Morgan says the other boy was arrested and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. Morgan says that the boy initially told police that he knocked a backpack off the table and then heard a loud sound. But police say the boy's description of what happened was inconsistent with the evidence officers found at the house where the shooting occurred.

The county's state's attorney's office is expected to announce Wednesday whether the teen will be charged.
