Honored Ill. fire chief not offered new contract

WASHINGTON – The board that oversees the fire department in the central Illinois town of Washington likes the job Fire Chief Mike Vaughn has done but apparently not enough to keep him around.

The board voted last month not to offer Vaughn a new contract after his six years on the job.

Weeks earlier Vaughn was given a statewide award for valor for his work during the November tornado that hit Washington.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reported the department’s employees are upset and petitioning the city to take over the department. The department is essentially private and contracts with the city.

Board President Bob Linsley said Vaughn has done a good job but his philosophy differs from the board’s.

Vaughn said, “I’d give my right arm to stay.”
