County offering senior assessment freeze exemption

Published: Tuesday, July 1, 2014 10:28 p.m. CDT

DeKALB – Applications are available for the senior citizen assessment freeze exemption.

The exemption is available for DeKalb County seniors 65 and older, and allows qualified applicants to freeze their assessment at a base year value. The exemption does not freeze taxes, but rather the assessed value. The deadline to apply for the 2014 assessment freeze was extended until Aug. 29.

Application requirements include that the owner must be 65 or older, have lived in and owned the property for the past two January firsts, and have a total household income of $55,000 for 2013. For information, call the Chief County Assessment Office at 815-895-7120.

Staff can help applicants complete the forms. A free notary service also is available.
