Ill. man gets probation in woman's heroin death

PITTSFIELD – A western Illinois man has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to a lesser charge related to a woman's 2012 heroin death.

The Quincy Herald-Whig (http://bit.ly/1poQBSe ) reports that 26-year-old John Edgar of Kampsville was sentenced Thursday in Pike County to 30 months of probation. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. A judge credited Edgar with roughly a year he has spent jailed.

Edgar originally was charged with drug-induced homicide for his role in the September 2012 death of 47-year-old Shanda Lopez of Milton. Authorities believe Edgar supplied Lopez with the heroin that killed her.

Edgar has also been ordered to pay Lopez's daughter about $5,000 in restitution.

Another man charged in the case already had pleaded guilty to obstructing justice and agreed to testify against Edgar.
