BELLEVILLE – A Belleville man is jailed after being accused of stealing dozens of landscaping plants from a southwestern Illinois shrine.

St. Clair County prosecutors on Tuesday charged 52-year-old Devance Jordan with felony theft from a place of worship. He remained jailed Wednesday on $25,000 bond.

Sheriff's investigators say someone stole six plants June 9 from the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows near Belleville. A week later, 27 more landscaping plants were taken.

Investigators say they identified and arrested Jordan after assessing evidence and surveillance footage.

Online court records don't show whether Jordan has an attorney. A message seeking comment was left Wednesday at a home telephone listing for Jordan.
