Delays expected on Chicago’s Kennedy Expressway

Published: Saturday, June 21, 2014 11:14 p.m. CDT

CHICAGO – Delays are expected this weekend on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago as a major bridge construction project continues. Transportation officials are warning that traffic backups could be worse than last weekend.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says westbound traffic on Interstate 90/94 is being diverted around the downtown bridge demolition site. The detour is fairly complicated.

Work at the Ontario Street Bridge should be finished by Monday morning. And IDOT expects work on the $16.5 million project to wrap up after this weekend instead of pushing into a third weekend as was originally planned. The agency says the fast pace of demolition work has allowed a shortened schedule.

IDOT recommends people use public transit. The Chicago Transit Authority is increasing its rail service to and from downtown.
