Drum and bugle corps Tour of Champions headed to NIU

Published: Thursday, June 26, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

At 7:30 p.m. July 13, Northern Illinois University and Huskie Stadium will once again play host to the Drum Corps Tour of Champions. This show will feature seven of the world’s top 12 drum and bugle corps.

This year’s show will welcome many Midwest Drum Corps Alumni, including Phantom Regiment, The Cavaliers, Guardsmen, Knights, Royal Airs, Vanguards and Madison Scouts.

Last year, this show attracted more than 6,000 visitors from 24 states to the DeKalb area.

“The Drum Corps weekend was the busiest days of summer,” Fatty’s Pub and Grille owner Jeff Dobie said in a news release.

Drum corps shows have called DeKalb home since they began more than 30 years ago, started by former NIU band director Michael Embrey. This year’s show will open with a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by the NIU Marching Band.

Each drum corps will have its own souvenir booth, and NIU and Fatty’s will sell food before the show. Alumni and fans also are invited to tailgate at Fatty’s, on West Lincoln Highway near the stadium, before the show.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $20 to $75 and are available by calling 815-756-1263 or going to www.ticketmaster.com.
