Suburban Chicago boy drowns in swimming pool

Published: Thursday, June 19, 2014 8:41 a.m. CST

BRIDGEVIEW – Police in suburban Chicago say a 6-year-old boy has drowned in a public swimming pool.

Bridgeview Police Chief Walter Klimek says lifeguards pulled Michael Duda of Justice from the shallow end of the Bridgeview Park District pool on Wednesday afternoon. He says the boy was unresponsive and couldn't breathe. Klimek says the boy was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The Cook County medical examiner says the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Klimek says the boy was at the pool as part of a park district summer camp program. He called the drowning a "tragic accident."

Police say they're continuing to investigate, but it appears lifeguards reacted quickly.
