Puppets tell barbed wire story

Salem Lutheran Church’s Puppet Praise Team will tell the story of Joseph Glidden’s barbed wire invention at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Glidden Homestead and Historical Center.

The team will perform an original skit on the lawn behind the historic brick barn at 921 W. Lincoln Highway as part of the homestead’s “Year of the Barn.” In case of rain, the program will be moved indoors.

The homestead will be open for tours and blacksmithing demonstrations from noon to 4 p.m. Tours are $4 for adults, and free for children younger than 14 and homestead members.

Puppet Praise is a team of 15 youth and adults from the Sycamore church who prepare skits and songs of faith for groups of all ages. Rod-arm puppets are manipulated from behind a curtained stage to illustrate a message with varied puppet personalities, as well as animal and creature puppets. Puppeteers use headset microphones to bring the puppets to life.

The team was established in 2000 under the direction of Carla Vanatta, the church’s associate in ministry. The team regularly participates in Salem worship services during the school year, and prepares outreach presentations for local care centers, churches and other organizations.

The Glidden Homestead has a variety of special events scheduled this summer, including Kids Fun Day at the Barn with games, a blacksmith activity and a petting zoo on June 22; an antique tool exhibit in July and the first-ever DeKalb County Barn Tour, in cooperation with the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association, on Aug. 9.
