DeKalb man shot by police taken to jail
DeKALB – A 23-year-old DeKalb man accused of threatening police with a pistol at a Suburban Estates apartment building was transferred Wednesday from Rockford Memorial Hospital to the DeKalb County Jail, authorities said.
Hassan R. Coleman, of the 1300 block of West Lincoln Highway, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault to a police officer. He remained in jail Wednesday unable to post 10 percent of his $100,000 bail, according to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Police received a call about 1 p.m. Saturday about a man with a gun inside the complex on Twombly Road west of Glidden Road. After Coleman pointed a gun at police, a DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy shot him in the shoulder, police said.
Coleman was armed with both a shotgun and a handgun, police said.
If convicted of one of the charges he faces, Coleman could be sentenced to probation or up to three years in prison. Both charges are Class 4 felonies.
The officer who shot Coleman has been placed on administrative leave as Illinois State Police investigate the incident.
