PREP ROUNDUP: DeKalb tennis duo qualifies for state

The DeKalb boys tennis team of Micah Fagerstrom and Ravi Patel took third at Saturday’s Ottawa Sectional, earning a spot in the IHSA State Meet.

Fagerstrom and Patel defeated Belvidere’s Benediktas Burneckis and Sabit Ejub, 7-6 (10), 6-1, in the third-place match.

The state meet will be Thursday through Saturday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights and nearby sites.

The Barbs finished in fifth as at team with seven points. Mendota won the sectional title with 25.

DeKalb 3, Lake Park 1: Morgan Newport earned the win in relief for the Barbs (24-7). Katie Kowalski threw the first four innings, giving up just one hit. Abby Taylor and Sarah Friedlund each had a two-out hit and an RBI.

The win concludes the regular season for DeKalb, which opens up play in the Class 4A Huntley Regional this week.

Spartans sweep Sandwich: Sycamore beat Sandwich, 1-0, in Game 1 of a doubleheader, and defeated the Indians, 12-4, in Game 2.

Taylor Zak was the winning pitcher in the first game, striking out six. Jordyn Shultz had the game-winning RBI double that scored Tristyn Criswell in the first inning.

In Game 2, McKenna Marcinkowski earned the victory for Sycamore, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five.

Baylie Petit finished 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while Taylor Jones was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Criswell was 2 for 4.

“It was nice to send the seniors off with two wins today. Every one of them contributed positively in both games which is a great way to end our regular season,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “Taylor looked pretty sharp in Game 1 for not having pitched in a week. McKenna got through one rough inning and settled down for the rest of Game 2.  The defense played well behind both pitchers today. We need to keep that up going into [today].”

Kaneland wins three: At Aurora, Kaneland swept a doubleheader at Rosary, 11-1 and 12-1 in five innings, and then won at West Aurora, 1-0, to cap the regular season with a three-win day.

Angie Morrow threw a shutout for the Knights (19-11) in the West Aurora game and also had an RBI double in the top of the seventh for Kaneland’s lone run.

Courtney Davis (Game 1) and Shannon Herra (Game 2) had the pitching wins in the sweep of Rosary.

Hiawatha runner going to state: At the Class 1A Oregon Sectional, Hiawatha sophomore Phillip Nordgren advanced to the state meet with a second-place finish in the 3,200-meter run. Nordgren finished the race in 10 minutes, 30.68 seconds.

The Hawks finished 12th with eight points.

Indian Creek finished 11th with 10 points, but did not advance anyone.

Elgin 5, DeKalb 4: The Barbs lost a nonconference game.
