Authorities responded to a crash involving a car and a semitrailer north of Genoa on Tuesday afternoon.

GENOA – A 69-year-old Genoa area man accused of driving under the influence in a crash with a semitrailer was in serious condition Tuesday night at a Rockford hospital.

Russel N. Runge, of 15200 Melms Road near Genoa, was driving his 2009 Toyota Prius south on Route 23 near Melms Road about 2:25 p.m. Tuesday when he crossed the centerline and struck a northbound semitrailer, according to a DeKalb County Sheriff's Office news release. He suffered a cut to his head, and a helicopter took him to OSF St. Anthony's Medical Center in Rockford.

The semitrailer driven by Carl L. Porter, 52, of Henderson, Nevada, came to rest in a field southwest of the intersection, the news release states. Porter was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, where he was listed in good and stable condition.

Runge was charged with driving under the influence and improper lane use.
