DeKALB – A 15-month-old toddler who was on life support after a 25-year-old DeKalb woman allegedly choked him for several minutes died Friday, police said.

The child died about 1:30 p.m. at Rockford Memorial Hospital. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Winnebago County. Authorities expect to upgrade charges against Jessica L. Breuer to first-degree murder.

Breuer, who court records show suffers from bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, was first charged with aggravated battery of a child younger than 13 and aggravated battery. The case is next due in court June 12.

Police say Breuer choked the boy April 23 after he bit her in the chest. The child's mother was sleeping at the time, police said.

The child had a brain injury and was in critical condition. DeKalb police investigators learned that the brain injury was due to lack of oxygen to the brain.
