On a Wing and a Prayer jazz band will be the featured performer at DeKalb's first New Orleans Jazz Weekend June 7 and 8.

DeKalb’s first New Orleans Jazz Weekend June 7 and 8 will feature A Wing and A Prayer Dixieland Orchestra in three unique settings.

After stints playing restaurants, ice cream socials, parades, funerals, worship services, barbecues, shows and festivals, the seven-piece ensemble will kick off its 20th season in the DeKalb area with a New Orleans-style Jazz Party from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Faranda’s, 302 Grove St. Ragtime and jazz pianist Pauline Cultra and New Orleans jazz clarinetist Brian Patti will be guest performers.

Guests at the party can experience traditional and Dixieland jazz music in a cabaret setting. There will be a cash bar and a dance floor. Tickets cost $20. Early registration is available at www.justmakeithappen-dekalb.com or buying tickets at Faranda’s in advance guarantees preferred seating. At-the-door sales open at 6 p.m. that evening.

On Sunday, June 8, jazz lovers can experience an upbeat New Orleans jazz worship service at 9 and 11:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 321 Oak St. in DeKalb. The music, a blend of familiar songs, hymns, gospel and secular music, begins 15 minutes before each service.

The New Orleans Jazz Weekend is JMIH’s latest effort to enliven DeKalb’s area cultural scene with one of America’s original gifts to the world, traditional jazz.

“We love to celebrate the many talented artists and classic music traditions of America,” Just Make It Happen President John D. Smith said in a news release. “Everyone is invited for some great fun.”
