PREP ROUNDUP: Kaneland baseball takes 2 of 3 from Sycamore

The Kaneland baseball team defeated Sycamore, 2-1, on Thursday afternoon, scoring the winning run in the top of the seventh on an RBI from Joey Panico.

Nick Henne was the winning pitcher, giving up one hit in 11⁄3 innings pitched. Nick Stahl earned his seventh save of the season. Curtis Thorson went 2 for 3 for Kaneland.

The Spartans were held to two hits. Ian Kidd went 1 for 3 with a double for Sycamore.

The Knights are 14-8 and 9-3 in conference play. The Spartans fall to 18-5 overall and 8-4 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

Barbs fall: Yorkville beat DeKalb, 5-4. Jared Johnson went 1 for 2 with a home run for the Barbs (9-11, 2-10 Northern Illinois Big 12 East), while Josh Snead finished 1 for 3 with a triple and an RBI.

Dylan Farrell threw four scoreless innings in relief, walking one and striking out three.

“I thought in the first three innings of the game we played poorly in all aspects. We didn’t pitch, we didn’t play defense, we didn’t hit,” DeKalb coach Jake Howells said. “But I’ll give our guys credit, we didn’t give up. They stuck with it, Dylan gave us a chance to come back.”

Cogs get walk-off victory: Genoa-Kingston beat Marengo, 6-5, on a Will Crozier walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth. Crozier went 2 for 5 for the Cogs, while Jake Langford finished 4 for 5 with two runs scored. Griffin McNeal was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Tommy Hansen got the win in relief, throwing seven innings without giving up an earned run.

G-K is now 12-8 and 5-2 in conference play.

Hawks lose nonconference contest: Alden-Hebron beat Hiawatha, 6-5.

Will Corn went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs for the Hawks. Nick Doolittle finished 2 for 3. Taylor Edwards went 1 for 1 with a double and two RBIs.


Cogs take down Hornets: Baylie Ullmark and Paige Keegan each went 4 for 5 for Genoa-Kingston in a 11-1 win over Harvard. Kendall Strack was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, while Rachel Joos was 2 for 4 with two doubles.

Ullmark was the winning pitcher, giving up one hit while striking out five in four innings of work.

The Cogs improve to 14-7 and 4-4 in the Big Northern East.

“I liked our energy early on after a tough loss last night,” G-K coach Mike Lauer said. “That was good on the kids’ part. Pleased with that.”

T’wolves take down Christian Life: Indian Creek beat Rockford Christian Life, 23-4, to improve to 8-7.


Knights shut out Foxes: Brittany Olson, Holly Collingbourne and Heather Ortiz had goals for Kaneland in a 3-0 win over Yorkville. Collingbourne also had an assist.

Kaneland is now 13-1-1 and 7-0-1 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

T’wolves win: Indian Creek beat Rockford Christian Life, 6-0, to improve to 10-2.


Barbs win: DeKalb defeated Rochelle, 4-1. Owen Smith won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles for the Barbs, while DeKalb got wins in all three doubles matches.

Micah Fagerstrom and Ravi Patel won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while the team of Nate Newman and Sean Connors won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Justin Peele and Gabe Olalde won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

DeKalb is now 12-7 and 7-2 in conference play.
