Letter: Preserve Our Neighborhoods concerned for future

Published: Thursday, May 15, 2014 11:35 p.m. CDT

To the Editor:

Preserve Our Neighborhoods is a group formed by concerned homeowners, property owners and residents of the neighborhoods that are in the “collar area” around Northern Illinois University, including the Ellwood Historic Neighborhood/Ellwood Historic District, The North 40/Fox Hollow/ Hillcrest, Garden Road, Normal Road, and Lincoln Highway between Castle Drive and First Street.

Our neighborhoods would be impacted by plans that are being made by the city of DeKalb, Re:New DeKalb and NIU. This group formed because the homeowners, property owners and residents were not included as “stakeholders” during meetings that were held by NIU, the DeKalb City Center Project Management Team and the city of DeKalb Planning and Development Division.

There are two documents that we have been studying in regard to plans that would greatly change DeKalb. If you want to read them for more information:

The DeKalb City Center plan:www.cityofdekalb.com/Downloads/DeKalb%20City%20Center.pdf

The NIU Master Plan Thesis:www.niutoday.info/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Campus-re-envisioned.pdf

Because of the nature of these plans, and their impact on DeKalb, our group is currently expanding to include all interested citizens of DeKalb.

If you want to preserve the history of DeKalb, or are interested in our group, you can email us at preserveourneighborhoods@gmail.com, or you can write us or make a donation to: 600 Lincoln Highway No. 277, DeKalb, IL 60115-0277.
