Rauner: Illinois can't tax its way out of problems

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner (ROW'-nur) has told a group of business leaders he'd be a much-needed advocate for them if elected Illinois governor.

The Winnetka Republican spoke Wednesday during the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and the Illinois Manufacturers' Association's annual Business Day Meeting.

Rauner faces Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in the November general election.

Rauner says the state needs to be more pro-business and can't tax its way out of its problems.

He opposes extending the temporary income tax increase which is scheduled to roll back in January. Quinn wants to make the increase permanent to avoid cuts to education.

Quinn also spoke at the event, where he criticized Rauner's lack of a budget plan.

Rauner says he plans to release details in the "not too distant future."
