MARENGO – Genoa-Kingston rolled past Marengo, 5-1, behind superb pitching by sophomore Brady Huffman and a big two-out hit from Mike Kuhn on Tuesday.

Huffman pitched all seven innings, striking out 13 Marengo hitters without allowing a walk in the Cogs’ Big Northern Conference East Division win.

The Indians’ only run was unearned when the Cogs’ defense committed a couple of infield errors in the bottom of the sixth inning.

“He was throwing every pitch for a strike today,” G-K coach Anson Ellis said. “He had them swinging at everything – breaking balls, fastballs, changeups – and not putting the bat on the ball very much.”

The Cogs had a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Kuhn ripped a two-out double that drove home a pair of base runners and gave G-K some breathing room in the game, Ellis said.

Joe Murray added a pair of hits and scored a run for the Cogs, who improved to 10-8-1 overall, 4-2-1 in the BNC East.

Knights stun Spartans: Kaneland rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead and then shut Sycamore down in the top of the seventh in a Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division win.

The Knights (13-8 overall, 8-3 NI Big 12 East) pulled even with Sycamore in the division.

The Spartans fell to 18-4 overall, 8-3 in the NI Big 12 East. Kaneland’s Nick Stratman had the game-winning hit, a 2-run home run in the sixth. Cam Godinsky was 1 for 1 with a double and a run scored for the Spartans.

Yorkville 2, DeKalb 1: DeKalb pitcher Zach Moan was the hard-luck loser in the Barbs’ NI Big 12 East loss to the Foxes.

Moan pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts and four walks, but Yorkville scored the winning run on a double-play groundout in the top of the third.

Junior outfielder Noah Baert was 2 for 3 for the DeKalb, and junior infielder Jake Kuykendall was 1 for 3 with a double as DeKalb fell to 9-10 on the season, 2-9 in the NI Big 12 East.
