Strohacker: 55 years of Genoa royalty

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the Genoa Days King and Queen scholarship contest. The Genoa Chamber and member businesses recognize the importance of education as well as the increasing costs that come with it. The contest is an opportunity to acknowledge youth in the community and provide them with financial assistance to reach their future goals.

Contest committee members announced this year’s semifinalists to the Genoa-Kingston High School senior class April 15 at the high school. Committee members include: Chairwoman Jamie Ullmark of American Family Insurance, Jennifer Rhoads of Resource Bank, Josh Kubiak of Edward Jones, Heather Criddle of Resource Bank, Gwen Garza of NB&T and Michael Cirone of 3 Roses Realty.

Congratulations to this year’s King candidates: Drew Anderson, Nicholas Barthel, William Crozier, Tyler Dougan, Luke Gentile, Michael Kuhn, Tyeler L’Huillier, Salvatore Lopez, Paul Stensrud and Eli Thurlby. Congratulations to this year’s Queen candidates: Kayla Butz, Sydney Campbell, Olivia Cotton, Kara Dalby, Kylie Dalby, Samantha Hansel, Hannah Hill, Lauren McKinney, Amanda Murray and Payton Petruchuis.

The semifinalists will complete a detailed questionnaire to be returned to the committee, who will then narrow the contestants to five king and five queen candidates. The final private judging will take place from 6 to 7:45 p.m. the first evening of Genoa Days – June 11 – at Heartland Bank. Judging will be completed on the main stage in downtown Genoa at 8 p.m. where the 2014 Genoa Days King and Queen will be crowned to rein over Genoa Days for the rest of the week.

This year we are honored to have Brad Shortridge and Wade Buzzard as the Masters of ceremony. We look forward to seeing you at the festivities. The best of luck to all of our candidates!

• Cortney Strohacker is executive director of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce.
