CHAMPAIGN — The state climatologist says April was both cooler and more damp than usual across Illinois. But after months of below-average temperatures last month was closer to normal.

State Climatologist Jim Angel says in a statement Monday that the statewide average temperature for April was 51.9 degrees. That's almost 1 degree cooler than average. Every month since November has been below average, but April's was the smallest departure.

Angel said the statewide average precipitation for April was 5.1 inches. That's 1.3 inches more than the average.

The wettest spot in the state was Harrisburg with 12.96 inches of precipitation.

But Angel noted that parts of central Illinois had lower-than-usual rainfall.
